Preparing for your next trip can be a lot of work. There are a ton of factors that go into making your vacation happen. Once you have everything booked and ready to go there are a few more things that you will want to do to prepare. I’m talking about preparing for your return. It is important to return from your nice relaxing vacation to no surprises. The last thing you want to do when you get home is worry about the things that you failed to address before you left, or worse yet, stress out while you are on vacation. Follow a few of these recommendations before you head out on vacation and you’ll return with minimal hassles to deal with. You will be happy that you took care of these things ahead of time!
Before you leave, talk with one of your friends or relatives who lives close and let them know where you are going and how long you will be gone. It is always good to let someone know where you will be. It is a good idea to give them a key to your home in case of an emergency situation. Ask them if they can grab your mail while you are gone and watch over your place.
If you have plants that need watering or pets then I assume that you have already set up arrangements to get them fed. If not, you need to get on it! Please make sure your pets and plants don’t go hungry while you are gone!
When you return, odds are that you’ll have a ton of laundry to do. You don’t want additional housework bogging you down. The first couple of days after you get home should be for readjusting to normal life, going through your great trip pictures, and catching up on what you missed while gone.
Clean up your place before you leave, you will love coming home to a clean house. Make sure there are no dishes in the sink, the bed is made, and the trash is taken out just before your trip. You don’t need to go too crazy with the cleaning, just a few minor things will make your return so much more pleasant.
You don’t want to come home to an overgrown yard. Mow it down before you leave and do any other necessary yard work so it is not a huge project when your return. If you will be gone for an extra long time then hire someone to come over and do some of the work while you are gone.
Pay Your Bills
I’ve failed on this one many times, and it is now one of my priorities when I prepare a trip. You have probably budgeted for your trip; make sure that you are budgeting for your return too. Make sure you don’t spend all of your money while on vacation, or you may not be able to pay your rent and other bills when you return.
You may be taking some time off of work while you leave, and if all of your regular hours are not covered by vacation pay then you may not be getting the paycheck that you are used to when you get back home. If you don’t have money to cover your regular expenses then you could be paying late fees and playing catch up for awhile. That can be a real pain.
I like to pay my bills ahead of time when I leave. This way I know that I have a whole month after I get back before my next set of bills is due. Traveling is much more enjoyable when you are not worrying about how you’ll afford life when you get back home.
Fill the Tank
Fill up your car with gas the night before you leave. If you are parking at the airport you can do this on the way. It’s nice to have a full tank in your car when you return. It’s one less task you will need to complete when you get home.
Preparing for your return home is very important when planning a vacation. It is definitely not as exciting as creating a trip itinerary, but you will be super happy that you took the above steps and prepared adequately for when you get home. Having a clean house to come home to and no surprises with your home or financially is what you want when the vacation is over.
What are some of the ways that you prepare for your return home? I would love to hear your ideas!
